This is a popular fishing hangout for the old and young. Most fish from the east side of the bridge. A few more agile folks will ease down the bridge embankment with fishing gear in tow and try their luck from the bank. Still some of the more intrepid anglers will finesse a a creek boat down the bank and float down to the NC 71 bridge. This is a distance of as the crow flies about 3 miles, but as you drift about six miles. The water is the trademark tea color from the tannin leached into the water by the trees lining the banks. This river is many things to many people, a fishing spot, a swimming hole, or a meditation place. Everyone should have the opportunity to enjoy the slow moving, cypress lined Lumber River. An old poem by John Charles McNeill, "Sunburnt Boys" comes to mind any time I spend time near the Lumber River. Check out the following link for the poem "Sunburnt Boys", (visit link)
Recommended tackle: Spinning rod, bobber, worms or crickets

Recommended fishing methods:
Depending on watch you are angling for will dictate your method. For catfish you can't beat a stinky bait fished off the bottom. For bass a top water plug or a spinner bait is the way to go. My preference for dark water fishing like the lumber is a red/white Freddy beetle spinner, gets'em every time,
