(56) Lazaretto (Sp., hospital), 14.6 m, a small community on Lazaretto Creek, was formerly the site of a quarantine station, now on Cockspur Island, and of a hospital to which slave boats brought Negroes to be examined and treated. The slaves who died were buried in unmarked graves near by. An oak grove covers the remains of low-lying Federal breast-works used to protect the batteries that shelled Fort Pulaski in 1862.
Cars can be parked at Lazaretto and a small government launch boarded for a trip to Fort Pulaski National Monument on Cockspur Island. (No charge on launch, 4 trips daily, hourly schedule on Sunday.)
As the boat passes into the South Channel of the Savannah River the oak grove of a Government Bird Sanctuary is visible (R) and beyond, the Tybee Lighthouse and Fort Screven. Ahead, outlined against the sky on the detached tip point of Cockspur Island, is an Abandoned Lighthouse, which for many years marked the river channel.

----------
?After the repeal of the anti-slavery provision in the Charter of the Colony of Georgia in 1749, an act permitting the importation of slaves ordered the erection of a Lazaretto (Quarantine Station) on Tybee Island. Not until 1767 were 104 acres purchased from Josiah Tattnall for this purpose. Completed the following year, the buildings were situated on the westernmost tip of Tybee, at the mouth of what soon became known as Lazaretto creek. In its hospital vayagers who arrived ill were treated and those who died were buried in unmarked graves. After continuious use through the Revolution, the Grand Jury reported it in ruinous condition in 1785 and a new station was later erected on Cockspur Island.
