Pompey's Pillar is a National Monument and National Historic Landmark due to one piece of graffiti etched into its face. While returning east on the Lewis & Clark Expedition, William Clark stopped at this pillar and climbed up and etched his signature and date, July 25, 1806, into the sandstone. This graffiti is now protected under glass and by alarms as it is the only remaining physical evidence found along the route that was followed by the expedition. There are stairs leading to his signature and then to the top of the Pillar.
