Though no longer in operation, the Marianne Theatre is a great example of the art-deco style.

The Marianne Theatre opened in 1941 and seats 542. It replaced the Sylvia Theatre which was located several blocks to the west. The front facade is art deco at its best, with blue and orange tiles and cream colored columns. The theatre has a free standing box office with a set of wooden doors on each side. The doors each have a half moon glass in them. The interior is also done in an art deco mode, and has a small stage. Though closed in the mid-90's, the theatre has recently undergone a restoration and a rebirth is supposedly on the horizon. The marquee was re-lit and the sight supposedly caused a traffic problem on Fairfield Avenue.
This was a popular destination for my family when I was a kid and I also frequented the theatre through my college days. "Risky Business" was one of the movies I saw here for $1. Got my money's worth that night. I also saw "The Man Who Loved Women" and felt like that was a dollar I'd never see again.
