This unusual and original artwork on a walkway in the sunny Bay of Plenty town of Whakatane has the distinction of being the World's First Vertigraph.

From an original concept by Colin Hughes, fourteen local artists completed the work on the Hillcrest steps at the start of the Kohi Point Walkway.
The vertigraph on the steps at the start of the walkway consists of 43 horizontal planes of glazed tiles created by local artists. Each forms its own picture, yet when viewed from a distance the panels form a continuous picture of local flora and fauna, from the bottom of the sea, through beach, wetland, bush and sky, ending in a starscape. A group of local Arts and Crafts Society members was responsible for the 2-year project to hand-paint the tiles that complete the Whakatane Vertigraph.
The special tiles were glazed at the local Cheddar Valley Pottery, and the Vertigraph was gifted to the District Council by the Whakatane Arts and Crafts Society. It was opened July 2007 by the Mayor Colin Holmes and blessed by local Maori kaumatua.
Access and Signposted in Canning Place at the start of the Kohi Point Walkway (behind the big Rock in The Strand).
