This is a beautiful park in northeast California that offers forests, volcanos, glaciers and hydrothermal areas. Lassen Volcanic NP has 150 miles of hiking trails, 8 campgrounds, and 50 mountain lakes. The park covers about 106,372 acres.

Lassen Volcanic NP started as two different National Monuments - Cinder Cone NM and Lassen Peak NM in 1907. B.F. Loomis documented much of the volcanic activity in the park. The Loomis Museum located in the park displays many of his photos. Lassen park contains all four types of volcanos. Because of the high elevation and influences of the Pacific Ocean, the park can get up to 40 feet of snow per year. The park is open year round but the road in the park is usually closed November through April. During the summer months there are lots of activities and ranger-led programs.
One of the major highlights of the park is Lassen Peak. It is an active volcano with it's last major eruption in 1915. There is a trail to the top of the mountain. This is a strenuous 5 mile round trip hike. The elevation gain is almost 2000 feet. From the top of Lassen the views are spectacular; you can see the Sacramento Valley and Mt. Shasta.
Bumpass Hell is another major attraction in the park. This hike is 3 miles round trip with only about 300 foot elevation change. During this hike you can seee an active hydrothermal basin. There are hissing fumaroles, boiling mudpots and steaming water. You can smell the sulfer before you see it.
The Kohm Yah-mah-nee Visitor Center is open daily 9am-5pm but is closed on Dec. 25th. The Loomis Museum is open from 9am to 5pm on the following schedule: May 26th - June 19th (Fri/Sat/Sun) June 23rd - Sept. 4th (Daily) Sept. 6th - Sept. 30th (Wed. - Sun.).
