This pieces were originally designed to be part of a memorial for the famous composer Richard Wagner who was born, lived and was buried in Bayreuth. The memorial was planned in 1932 by the city of Leipzig by the artist Emil Hipp.
Unfortunally the memorial was never completed to the town decided to "hide" the pieces in the town wall. The left fresco shows a scene from the Opera "Der fliegende Holländer" ("The Flying Dutchman"), the left one shows a scene from the Opera "Götterdämmerung" ("Twilight of the Gods").
