The original bridge that spanned the Seneca River at this location was a steel arch bridge with a steel deck. In November of 1990, while crossing the bridge, a NYSDOT plow struck a vertical steel support, causing the bridge to collapse into the river

Haiti Island is located outside the Village of Port Byron and has a population of around 100 people. When this bridge collapsed, the inhabitants of the island had only one other way to get on or off the island, that being by boat. Because of the immediate need to find a solution to this problem and no money set aside for a situation such as this, it was quickly decided to replace the collapsed bridge with one that could be built cheaply and quickly. Within a couple of weeks, a crew of men from the Civil Corp. of Engineers was on site, piecing together what was supposed to be a temporary structure that would allow the residents to again be able to access the island by vehicle. However, as almost 20 years have gone by, it appears that this steel framed, wooden deck bridge will be all they get, at least for the fore-seeable future.
