The area is named after an explorer and mountaineer K. V. Bumpass. While leading a group thru the area his leg went into a boiling mud pot and he made a comment about the "decent to Hell was easy." For me the smell of the sulfer was Hell!
It's a moderate 3 mile (round trip) hike from the parking area to Bumpass Hell. Thus, only a couple hours to go to Hell and back!
