Admiral Byrd was born in Winchester, Virginia. He earned the medal of honor for being the first to fly over the north pole. Byrd was both an aviator and an explorer. He conducted 5 expeditions to Antartica. He died in 1957 and is buried in Arlington Cemetary in Arlington, VA.

This is a bronze sculpture created by Dr. Jay Morton. It was commissioned and dedicated on July 14, 1997.
