Long Description:

This interesting orientation table on Mt Pisgah in Buford Park doubles as a memorial and geological history lesson. During the solstice, light shines through the holes in the base. It is called by the sculptor the Mt. Pisgah Sighting Pedestal.

This work was commissioned by the Kesey family of Pleasant Hill as a memorial to their son Jed Kesey who was killed in a 1984 accident, along with another University of Oregon wrestler, while traveling to a meet in Washington. According to the Eugene, Register Guard, the memorial was installed and dedicated in October of 1990.

The sculptor of this table is Pete Helzer who has many other works featured in the area including a sit by me type statue in downtown Eugene that features Jed's father Ken Kesey. Kesey authored several books including his most famous 1962 novel One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest.

The orientation table shows the area surrounding Mt. Pisgah including the valley where the Kesey home is located to the east.
