The factory was built in 1844 by Zenas Crane and is "the oldest paper manufactory...in continuous operation at one site." The site was added to the National Historic Register in 1983.

Since 1879, the Crane Paper Company has had the exclusive government contract to manufacture the paper used in the currency of the United States.
