From the historical marker: "The church was a center of anti-slavery sentiment and the building was believed to be a station on the Underground Railway." The orignal church was torn down in 1981 but there is a new church only 50 yards away. The coordinates are for the historical marker, not the new church. The church website states: "A trap door was cut in the floor at the southwest corner so that the cellar below could be used as a hiding place for slaves on their way north via the Underground Railroad. "
