Salem Presbyterian Church was founded in 1780 by Samuel Doak. "An interesting story tells how Doak selected this particular spot. He was supposedly riding through the forest that then covered the area when he met some settlers who were felling trees. When they learned he was a minister, they asked him to preach a sermon to as many as they could call together. Doak supposedly used his horse as a pulpit and the grove as a sanctuary. The sermon pleased the hastily assembled congregation so much that the people implored him to stay. He agreed and purchased the farm that emcompasses the church, school, and cemetery."
