Per "Jonesborough" by Paul M. Fink (page 13), it states that the Washington County, Tenn court records shows that lesser crimes were sentenced to confinement in the pillory or stocks. Whipping was also used for men - and women - with a petty thief receiving ten lashes. A very severe sentence for perjury was to have the man stand at the pillory for an hour WITH HIS EARS NAILED. Once the time was done, the ears were to be cut off and left nailed until sunset.
