Nith Inshore Rescue, the independent lifeboat serving Dumfries and Galloway, is based in Glencaple on the Solway Firth, 5 miles south of Dumfries in south west Scotland. They provide a voluntary search-and-rescue service covering the estuary of the River Nith together with other rivers and lochs in the area. The crew are all unpaid volunteers, on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
All lifeboats, whether RNLI or independent, come under the control of the Coastguard and they all carry out the same front-line search-and-rescue duties. They saved or assisted 87 people since they were founded in the winter of 1981-82. 2006 was the busiest year; they were called out 25 times, so on average once a fortnight, and saved or assisted 18 people and two cattle.
