Ferry Hill Lock

This is the thirty-eighth lock, heading west, in the Chesapeake and Ohio canal system. It is located in Washington County, Maryland, west of Antietam National Battlefield Park. It is located at canal milepost 72.8.

Lock 38 is found at the southwest end of MD Route 34 where it reaches the shore of the Potomac river. From Route 34, turn south on Canal Road by the gates of the former C&O Canal National Park headquarters. Continuing west on Route 34 will take you across the James Rumsey Bridge into Shepherdstown, West Virginia.

This is a particularly scenic stretch of the river. There are multiple stone piers at this location from the various bridges that crossed the Potomac at this point over the years.
