Field Day of the Past is an exhibit that showcases items preserved from days gone by. A number of items come from the town of Short Pump in Henrico County, an area that is experiencing rapid growth and is losing its rural character. One of the items on display is this fire tower, but since it is visible from the road, one does not have to pay an entry fee. There is some speculation that this tower is the former Short Pump fire tower. The website for Field Day of the Past explains, however, that it was originally located along route 54 in Hanover County. Reportedly, the two towers are almost identical in appearance, hence the confusion.
Complicating matters, both towers were intersection stations (benchmarks). Since this fire tower looks like the Short Pump fire tower, "found it" logs appear on the corresponding benchmark page at geocaching.com. Even if this was the Short Pump tower, a relocation would effectively "destroy" the station since it's not in its original location.
For those interested, the PIDs for the Hanover and Short Pump fire towers are GV5679 and GV5685, respectively. Both (benchmarks) are now marked as destroyed, The location of the Short Pump fire tower is unknown, but at least the Hanover fire tower can be viewed in it's new location.
