The missing gnomon would have been horizontal.

Although mass dials with a semicircle of dots are not uncommon, this example is carefully made. The three groups of five dots are unusual and probably mark the morning, noon and afternoon services. The larger dots are at hour intervals, the smaller ones being the half hours.
