The Merrimack begins at Franklin, NH, at the confluence of the Pemigewasset and Winnipesaukee Rivers. It runs southward through Concord, Manchester and Nashua, New Hampshire; After turning eastward, while running through Lawrence, Lowell and Methuen, Massachusetts, it forms a portion of the border - by delineating a three-mile wide strip of land on the north bank, which belongs to New Hampshire. The coordinates listed correspond to the navigational aid known as "Ben Butler's Toothpick" (see photos) situated on a small jetty at Salisbury Beach, MA, and regarded by mariners as marking the mouth of the Merrimack River at the Atlantic ocean.
