Now dilapidated, this former school and NRHP site is reported to be a warehouse. Sitting high atop a hill, this structure dates back to 1848 and is made of brick and wood. I was unsure if it was in use, so I climbed up about 6 feet and scaled the black wrought iron fence to investigate. The first thing which claimed my attention were two date stones. The first rests inside the brick facade, high atop and in the middle. It was hard to read but I was pretty sure I say a date from the early 1800s. The other stone is a cornerstone and is completely worn away so as to be unreadable.
I did note mail in the slot and a filled recyclable bin to the left filled with beer cans, bottles and other reclaimables. Obviously, someone uses this building today. it is completely surrounded by houses and served this entire neighborhood for blocks around. Naturally, like many other neighborhood schools, it closed when Philly started to modernize and centralize its schooling system in the 60s.
The school is built in the Greek Revival style. it is also know as the Irving School and was designed by Henry Funk. It is located on 2624 Haworth St.
