Una serie de fallas determinan la presencia de un acusado escarpe a lo largo del cual se adapta el río Jarama en su tendencia a migrar hacia el suroeste. La acción de socavamiento del río en la base del mismo condiciona la escasa estabilidad de su frente, donde es fácil observar grandes bloques y torreones ligeramente inclinados evidenciando un claro riesgo de caída por vuelco (slab). Esta inestabilidad está además favorecida por la litología de la zona: se trata de una serie de yesos, arcillas y margas lo suficientemente competentes para dar lugar a este pronunciado relieve pero muy sensibles a la presencia de agua por su plasticidad, expansividad y cierta solubilidad.
El desprendimiento ocurrido en este lugar en el otoño de 1993 es un fenómeno complejo que reúne características propias de vuelco de bloques con una componente de deslizamiento en su base. Recientemente, en el invierno 2007-2008 se ha producido una nueva caída de material de pequeña magnitud.
En el visor cartográfico de la Comunidad de Madrid podemos ver una imagen anterior a su ocurrencia seleccionando en Tipo de mapa el ortofotomapa "Total comunidad 1991" que es la imagen disponible más reciente anterior al suceso. Las posteriores a esa fecha muestran claramente el borde de la superficie de fractura del bloque que lo originó.
El lugar es fácilmente accesible a través del camino que une la zona de Casas de Eulogio y la presa del Rey, que podemos tomar en las proximidades de la Escuela de Protección Civil. El coche hay que dejarlo en las proximidades del llamado "Puente Casa de Eulogio" sobre el río Manzanares (en N 40º 19.456' W 003º 33.327'), pues el tráfico está restringido en la zona. Desde aquí cruzaremos el citado puente y luego, cuando se bifurca, tomamos la pista de la izquierda, que sigue el borde del cantil hasta el área del desprendimiento.

A series of geologic faults determined the presence of a sharp escarpment, along which fits the river Jarama in their tendency to migrate toward the southwest.
