Adjacent to the famous Spanish Steps and almost never used

With the top of these steps being just 2 meters from the top of the famous Spanish Steps, these connect the street of Via del Sebastianello with the above street and piazza and entrance to Villa Medici.

With virtually no pedestrian traffic, one must wonder why these steps were built. Speculation is that they existed before the more grandiose and monumental Spanish Steps were built.

At the base of the steps is a fountain, that was recently restored: (visit link)
