Pittsburgh is a city that currently has some 600 public stairways, maintained by the Public Works department. Most of them where build in the 1930's, as a mean to provide pedestrian access to the residents living in the hilltops to the flats below where most of the labor and industry sites were located.

The Kerr Street steps connect Kerr Street on the hilltop with Walbridge Street and South Main Street below.

A couple of homes are only accessible from the steps, and the postal worker must walk on the steps to deliver mail.
