The sailors were lost at sea October 4, 1936 during a rescue mission . The disk was placed in 1941 along highway 101. This is a popular stop for tourists watching for whale spouts or to see the spouting horns when the tide is in. There are many cliffs made of Basalt and Sandstone around the Bay. It appears that there are other benchmarks not far from here.
