The memorial is sculpture by Bernard (Jack) Batts of a wounded World War I soldier in a slumped position with his hand on his chest covering his wound and his other hand on his rifle. The memorial was originally placed in front of the American Legion Post in Franklin Heights from November 1936 to May 28, 1990. It was then moved to its current location where other veterans memorials have also been placed.
