Situated in a lush green valley leading inland from the waterfront of Papeete, the Roman Catholic Uranie Cemetery is a terraced profusion of vibrant colour and decoration. It is an interesting place to wander through, looking at the thousands of graves that are all adorned with potted tropical plants, shells, ornaments and other memorabilia. A lovely peaceful place with a nice viewpoint from the upper level of the cemetery at the top of the valley.
On All Saints Day families throughout the islands visit cemeteries and illuminate the graves with candles, also laying brand new white sand on tombs and decorating with wonderful multi-coloured tropical flowers. All Saints Day is November 1st, a good time to visit.
Access: Off the coastal road between the cruise-ship port and the airport, within walking distance of town.
