In 1956, East Germany's shipyards delivered the first series of 15 oceangoing vessels for the country's growing economy. The fifth ship of the series, delivered in July 1958 was M/V Dresden, which then sailed the world's oceans for eleven years until it was decommissioned due to engine trouble.
The shipping company donated the vessel to the city of Rostock, which turned it into the country's first maritime museum. A huge part of the ship remained exactly as it was used in the 1960s and visitors can still check out the engine room, the command bridge and several crew compartments. In addition, the former cargo holds were turned into exhibition rooms and today, the ship demonstrates the history of shipbuilding in East Germany and the history of the country's merchant fleet (in which the author of this waymark proudly served for 21 years).

In 2003, the ship and its museum became part of a much larger City Park.
