Gyula Castle is well preserved and brings the visitor back to the 13th century. Built as a fortress to protect the eastern plains of Hungary, the castle now serves as a popular tourist and historic attraction. The castle is entered via a drawbridge. On the first floor, the former workshops and storage areas are now exhibits of castle life. A particularly chilling exhibit was about 13th century "justice" administered by execution and torture. The second floor rooms are restored court rooms and living quarters full of princely furnishings. A climb up the spiral stairs will bring you to a walkway around the top of the castle walls. Still further up is a tower with a view across the town and even to Romania in the distance.
The castle is well-known for the summer theater productions performed in the courtyard.
Nearby in Gyula are thermal spas, and in the town is Hungary's second oldest cake shop. (oh, yum!)
