Southern Utah's Escalante Canyons contain some of the most desolate, wild and stunning country in the world. It includes sandstone rock arches, waterfalls and natural bridges that some say are more beautiful than any other natural scenery on earth.

But it also has a mysterious aura, a reputation that goes far beyond its beauty. For thousands of years, the strange and the unknown have enshrouded this region, a 400,000-acre expanse of rugged river canyons and majestic desert wilderness. The Anasazi and Fremont Indian tribes thrived here for hundreds of years until around 1300 AD, when they mysteriously packed up and left. To this day, no one knows why they moved away. The canyons also host thousands of archeological sites, most unsurveyed.

Adding more mystery to the region is the legend of Everett Ruess, a 20-year-old writer and artist who, in 1934, decided to venture into the Escalante Canyons to explore the red rock country. Ruess wanted to travel through the winding, sandstone canyons and makes stops along the way to write and paint. But, after leaving the small town of Escalante to begin his journey, he vanished, never to be seen again.

Some people say the ghost of Everett Ruess still haunts the Escalante Canyons. They say his ghost passes the lonely days by watching canyon visitors with an evil eye. If that's the case, he's not very busy. This barren region gets few visitors. Despite its undeniable beauty, one could walk for hours without spotting even a trail, let alone a fellow explorer.

But the real mystery of the Escalante Canyons lies in the canyons themselves. The canyons are deep wounds created from 180 million years worth of flowing - often raging and swirling - waters. Though the process of change is slow, the canyons continue to be formed and re-formed to this day.
