According to "The New Salem Sesqui-centennial", "Adolphus Porter was wounded at the battle of Newburn, sent home and granted a pension. He soon threw away his pension, enlisted again, and served to the end of the war."

After that, he built this mortarless stone arch bridge, in 1866. It spans the middle branch of the Swift River, and currently carries a hiking trail in a peaceful forest glen. Bridge appears solid, condition is good. There is a concrete slab or curbings added to the deck - visible in the photos.
The bridge is just a short walk from the parking area at DRC Quabbin gate 30, on Rt. 122. Thanks to KASHK9; we came here for his nearby GC.
