On my way home late Sunday night, more like Monday morning, I took the small town main street route to unwind a bit before heading off to see the sandman. This route would take me through Mauldin, Simpsonville, and Fountain Inn. When I got to Simpsonville, I spied a huge mural on the old Simpsonville Drugstore that was illuminated for display at night. I have passed this Mural hundreds of times, but never noticed the lighting at the base of the building. Naturally an investigation was at hand. A quick u-turn and a safe landing in the adjacent bank parking lot puts me at the base of the mural.

The mural itself is a mechanical looking piece which gives the impression of gears, levers, pulleys, wheels, and belts. There is a locomotive engine pulling a coal car in the upper left corner which gives it an industrial age feel, for lack of a better term. You can see in the upper right corner of the image that a sliding door on the second floor was left in place and incorporated into the design. It's quite possible the door set the tone for the design. There is a certain appearance artists try to convey in the presentation of their work and I believe the illumination of this piece lends itself to the artists design. The mechanical impression and the industrial age design blend with the black and dark red colors. There are a couple of hints of yellow in two of the shapes, but for the most part a darker piece. The presentation of the lighting was what caught my eye and completes the overall presentation of the piece by bringing out the mechanical and industrial concept. I recommend visiting this waymark at night.

City: Simpsonville

Location Name: Old Simpsonville Drug Store

Media: The mural appears to be a wood structure coated with a shiny paint, more than likely an oil based paint.
