This memorial is situated on Sermon Lane, between the Millennium Bridge and St Paul's Cathedral
On the octagonal plinth are the names of 1,027 firefighters, from all parts of the country, who lost their lives in the pursuit of duty between 1939 and 1945.
The sculpture, by John W Mills, shows a group of three firefighters, two of whom are operating a hose and a third standing figure of a sub-officer, pointing towards the fire and seemingly calling for reinforcements. The two hose operators are based upon a photograph entitled "A relief crew damping down in Cannon Street, 17th April 1941". The standing figure is a representation of Cyril Demarne, OBE. Cyril Demarne was the originator of the idea for the memorial, had been Chief Officer of the West Ham Fire Brigade during the War. He was also the father-in-law of the sculptor John Mills.
The memorial was unveiled by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother on May 4th 1991.
