Mount Feathertop sits in Victorias great dividing range.
The shortest and most easiest route would be the Razorback Ridge which you can get to by driving up to Mount Hotham and parking your car where you see the signs pointing out the Razorback Ridge.
The Razorback is 8.5kms long and is very very hard.
A fit person could make it in about 4 hours in summer, a person with a moderate fittness level could make in in about 5 hours (like me)
and someone who is not fit would probably not make it.
Another route is the Bungalo Spur which is a very steep 10.5kms long.
The Bungalo Spur is mainly used for walking down the mountain as it is easier than going back along the Razorback, Beware if you do this you might have to hitch a ride back up the mountain to get your car!!
The Razorback is a highly exposed ridge and the sun will get you.
If you are planning on doing the Razorback in winter make sure you pick your dates right because it becomes very dangerouse in a white out. Most people chose to camp while climbing Feathertop and why not with the great camping sites avalable at Federaton Hut, Federation Hut provides emergancy shelter for snow storms and lighting storms, There are lots of places to camp at Federation Hut and there are even toilets!!
The walk up to the summit is very very steep and exposed.
Climbing up to the summit in winter can be very dangerouse because in some places the snow will make some places vertical, crampons and ice axes might need to be used here, but the biggest thing to worry about in winter is the massive cornice that hangs over the summit ridge, you can clearly see in the snow where not to stand.
Remember that if you muck around on the summit ridge near the cornice you could break it off, stay away from it.
However in summer it is safe if you are fit and you dont jump of the edge :) it takes about 1 hour to 45 mins to get to the summit from Federation Hut.
Take plenty of water and warm clothes, remember that alpine weather can turn bad within minutes especally on an exposed ridge so be prepared for anything. Its also safe enough if you wanna take the kids because i did it when i was 11 and our friends baught there kids along and they were 8 and 7!!

The closest hospitals, police stations, ranger stations search and recue, Ski Patroll, fire department and ambulance are at Hotham Heights.

Good luck and have fun :)
