This tunnel, which is 503 yards yards in length is on the "Mineral Loop" of the Severn and Wye Railway in the Forest of Dean. The Mineral Loop ran through the Forest and served various collieries such as Foxes Bridge and New Fancy and rejoined the main line at Tufts Junction [4].
The tunnel was used for ammunition storage during the Second World War, and the line closed permanently in 1951 [1]. Links [2] and [3] contain pictures of the inside of the tunnel and more information.
The North portal (very close to the suggested parking) is accessible but as we had forgotten to bring a light (a rather basic omission for a tunnel hunting expedition!) we did not venture inside.
The South portal is in a very steep cutting which is fenced off and looks dangerous. It may be accessible by walking sufficiently far enough South to get to the trackbed then turning back North, but we didn't try this.
Brick ventilation shafts are visible near the road (see pictures)
