This observatory, dedicated June 19, 1901, was a gift to the college by Mrs. Mary Newton in memory of her husband Capt. Don Newton who had attended the college. The building is constructed of sandstone in a Greek Revival style with a copper dome capable of 320 degree rotation. It houses a 9.5 inch optical telescope still in use today by the college's astronomy department.
