Hardin County was established March 2, 1839 from portions of Pope and Gallatin. The county was named after Hardin County, Kentucky through the influence of emigrants from that county. The county seat was established in Elizabethtown in 1840 where it has remained.
The current courthouse was built 1926. The building was designed by architect Thomas S. Thompson and built by Corder & Karber Builders. The building has had little modification since it was built.
