Looking at front of hotel the addition to right was once an archway for the coach and horses, probably.

The main road between Heathwaite and Bowness would have been Lake Road, behind the building. The new road would have been created with the popularization of Windermere and Bowness as tourist venues, with the arrival of the railway. Horse drawn coaches would meet the travellers at the station and take them to the various hotels. By the 1950s the private motor car gave freedom to travel.
