La rivière Outaouais est la plus longue rivière du Québec. Cette rivière, qui coule sur plus de 1130 km prend sa source dans la réserve faunique de la Vérendrye. La rivière traverse, d'est en ouest, toute la région de l'Abitibi-Témiscamingue puis coule vers le sud dans le fleuve St-Laurent.

La longueur de la rivière justifie la distinction entre l'Outaouais supérieure et l'Outaouais inférieure. L'Outaouais supérieure est la partie comprise entre le lac Témiscamingue et le réservoir Dozois et draine un bassin hydrographique de plus de 23500 km carré.

Le Barrage Témiscaming est situé sur la frontière du Québec et de l'Ontario et sépare le cours de l'Outaouais supérieur et de l'Outaouais inférieure. Le barrage est constitué en fait de deux barrage situés de part et d'autre d'une petite ile.

Témiscaming Dam is located on the border of Quebec and Ontario and separates the course of the upper and the lower Outaouais. The dam is basically two dams located on both sides of a small island.
