A few hundred years ago, peat was often used for heating purposes as it was readily available in the western part of The Netherlands and, after drying, it provided good fuel. In fact, many of the current lakes in this part of the country were formed through the removal of the peat. These lakes are now mostly used for water sports, interestingly turning a dire necessity of life into a luxury.
This statue is on top of a bridge across a canal called Woudwetering.
