A forerunner of today's anise-based aperitifs like Ricard and Pernod, absinthe was France's national drink before it was banned in 1915 because of its negative effects on the nervous system. A famous painting by Edgar Degas shows two absinthe drinkers; van Gogh also probably downed a few glasses at the Auberge Ravoux in town.
