The Centennial Tree, was planted in 1882, the same year the town of Henry was founded.
The tree was planted by Dave and Lucenda Wiley, in front of their business, Lucenda's Millinary Shop.
The tree circumfenence was 30 feet and its height was 95 feet.
It survived at least two tornados in 1971 and 1984, losing at least 10 feet of its height in 1971.
It also survived the fire in 1986, which closed the Big Tree Cafe and Bar and forced the closing of Coyle's Grocery, where the monument now rests.
In recognition of thise landmark, the community estableshed a tree and beautification board on Arbor Day, April 26, 2002.
Henry is located on the western edge of Codington County, South Dakota, about 20 minutes from Watertown.
It had a population of 255 in July 2007, a 4% decrease from the 2000 census.
The town was incorporated on September 7, 1886, four years after the town was founded. It is made up of German, Norwegian, Irish, and Dutch ancestries.
