A major steamboat building center along the Monongahela, 1851-79, no less than 131 boats were constructed here (74 in the 1850s alone), primarily for the western river trade. The boatyards ceased operations when the railroad (PV&C) acquired the right-of-way in 1879. The bell is marked above with the years 1776 and 1976. No additional information about the bell is provided. I don't know if it is original to the location.
