In 1916, Atlanta and Jackson Township received a $10,000 Carnegie grant to build a library. The cornerstone for the brick and limestone building was ceremonially laid by the Atlanta Lodge of Freemasons on 22 November 1916. School was let out early so a children's chorus could sing at the ceremony, and a speech was given. The library was officially opened on 12 October 1917 with more pomp and circumstance. Speeches were given by the president of the Atlanta-Jackson Township Library Board and by the Indiana State Librarian. The program included other, shorter speeches and music. The opening day holdings were 1800 volumes.
Today, the Atlanta library is a branch of the Hamilton North Public Library, which, in turn, is part of the larger Evergreen Indiana consortium. It is open four days a week and holds various different activities, including craft instruction, story time, and a summer reading program. The exterior of the building appears unchanged from opening day in 1917.
