The post was chartered in 1921 and originally named for two men from the community killed in WWI. George Waite was the son of Grif and Maggie O'Connor Waite. He was in the signal corps and killed in France shortly before the war ended. William Westrum was tahe son of Knute and Olena Hovey Westrom. He was killed in France on September 12, 1918. Both are buried in France. The post later added the name Skovlund to the post name.

Located in northern Brookings County, South Dakota, Bruce has a population of 262 as of July 2007, a 3% decrease since ht 2000 census.

The town was incorporated on August 12, 1861 and was settled by German, Norwegian, Dutch, Irish, Danish, and Swedish peoples.

The town is nestled in a nice valley just east of Oakwood Lakes, and about 15 minutes northwest of Brookings, SD.

The school closed in 1975 and had a major impact on the city. Once the local school closes, it is extremely difficult for the city to continue to grow.

Tradition says that the community was named for the son of a railroad official, and another says it was named for African-American statesman B.K. Bruce.

The American Legion is active in the community with its building available for the community to use.
