The First Baptist Church was organized as a mission of the New Bethel Church ins 1839 and constituted as a church November 14, 1840. At first the congregation met in the courthouse at 2nd and Kentucky. The first church building was in 300 block of Broadway, the 2nd and 3rd buildings were at 5th and Jefferson. The second building was seized by the Union Army in 1851 and was used as a hospital during the Civil War. The present building which is the church's fourth was dedicated May 9, 1965.
