The trestle bridge at Lethbridge was completed by the Canadian Pacific Railway in 1909. It spans 1.6 kilometres (1 mile) across the steep banks of the Oldman River at a maximum height of 314 feet. That is higher than a football field. The bridge is symbolic of the engineering challenges the railway faced in its bid to provide the Canadian West with a rail service.
There seems to be a difference of opinion. Whereas the government plaque says it is "the longest and highest bridge of its kind in North America" the Canadian Society for Civil Engineering says it is the highest and longest steel railway bridge of its type in the world. See: (
