Stratford upon Avon was granted its Market Rights by King Richard I, and Borough status by the Bishop of Worcester in 1196.

This fountain was designed to mark 800 years, and was inaugurated by Her Majesty the Queen when she visited 8th November 1996.

The fountain has recently been moved (a few feet) from its original position, in the recent make-over of the Bancroft Gardens, which were re-opened in April 2009.

The sculptor was Christine Lee.
