The plaque is displayed on a flagpole and reads as follows:
'Exbury House was commissioned by the Admiralty in 1942. As HMS Mastodon the house became a 'Stone Frigate' and was used in preparation for the D-Day landings in 1944. Later it was renamed HMS King Alfred and then HMS Hawke and was used as a training base until 1955.

This plaque was unveiled by HRH the Prince Philip KG KT on 5 June 1995 to commemorate the many thousands of serving men and women who passed through these grounds.
