Brown Hill Trig point 719m

Brown hill is the highest point along a ridge line going west from Mt Stromlo. It is also along the southern border of Stromlo pine forest.

Spectacular views can be had in a 270deg vista. These views include the Murrumbidgee corridor and mount McDonald to the north and west. To the south is the Tidbinbilla, Hardy, Brindabella and Bullen ranges. To the east is Mt Stromlo and glimpses of Western creek.

The Stromlo pine forest was a plantation of Pinus radiate established from about 1913 onwards. In January 2003 the forest and surrounding areas were extensively damaged by fire. An interesting point to note that in December 1951 a fire destroyed 450 ha of pine trees at Stromlo. This fire also caused the loss of several Observatory buildings, 2 houses, 40 farm buildings, 6 bridges, 3 vehicles, several hundred kilometers of fencing and killed 2 people.

Bad fires have happened in this area in the past and will no doubt happen again.

A good web page on the Stromlo Forest park is listed below.

Access can be gained to this part of the forest by parking at the northern entrance to the Stromlo water treatment complex and following the perimeter fence around until you reach the fire trail which follows the southern border of the pine forest. On foot this takes approximately 20 minutes each way.
